And I’ve come to the realisation that this might well be one of my very favourite movies. Like, ever. Like, up there with Back to the Future and Star Wars, ever.

If you find a copy of the Blu-Ray lying around somewhere, and have absolutely any affection for the concept of giant robots punching giant monsters, you owe it to yourself to give it a watch. The grainy YouTube clip really doesn’t do the film justice.

One of very few movies I bought the 3D Blu-ray for. It’s so awesome. Jeremy Jahns (youtube movie reviewer) named his dogs Gypsy and Danger.

I really hope the sequel actually happens. It hasn’t been cancelled, and the last news I heard seemed pretty positive, but it’s always a worry with films that did just well enough to get their sequels greenlit, but not so well as to have a watertight guarantee they’ll actually get made.

You can tell it’s a real passion-project for del Toro, though, which gives me hope.

Agreed.

Giant robots fighting giant monsters. What’s not to like?

Yeah, that movie is ridiculous in all the right ways. The action and effects are so well done and over the top explode-y, the whole paired brains thing is improbable at best, but it drives the relationships and action, so it serves the plot well and can be forgiven on those grounds. It truely is the pinnacle of giant robot vs kaiju action sci-fi.

I remember discussing this movie with some friends of mine and we believed it fell a bit short; I loved the premise, the combat, the music (that theme song is epic) but I thought the dialogue was awful. Still, it’s like a live-action Evangelion , and I’m onboard with that.

It was on Netflix for a while but it looks like only a handful of regions still have it in the catalogue. Despite my thoughts on the dialogue, I think it’s a worthwhile watch.

Yes! The level of detail and general awesomeness in that movie blows my mind
